We need mobile phone masts. We need new ones, and to upgrade existing systems to keep up with demand. Some people are concerned that this will lead to increased 'radiation'.

What is 'radiation' ?

Mobile phone masts send and receive electromagnetic waves. In Switzerland there are strict limits on exposure to radiation, despite, as yet, there being no direct evidence of a negative effect on health.

These strict limits (up to ten times stricter than neighbouring countries) are stipulated by the Swiss Ordinance on Protection from Non-Ionising Radiation (NISV). Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) agree that these limits are adequate, but we want to be extra safe, so we support the Swiss Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communicaton at ETH Zurich in its research.
