Definition
Digital accessibility aims to remove the barriers faced by people with disabilities through the application of rules and best practices.
Accessible content (website, document, app, etc.) enables any person with a disability to access and interact with the same information as a person without a disability. Tools called assistive technologies act as a link between the person and the content being viewed. This means that a visually impaired or blind person can use a screen reader. This tool reads or translates all on-screen content into braille. A deaf person will be able to follow a video thanks to the presence of subtitles.
Some people with motor impairments use voice recognition software. These people can navigate the interface if the interactive elements (buttons, links, etc.) are coded appropriately.
Finally, a person with attention deficit disorder will have a better experience if they can stop the animations.
To ensure compatibility with various assistive technology tools, accessible content must be built according to certain norms and standards.
In Switzerland, we use the international WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standard. At Salt, we use the latest version.
