Using Salt Internet Security

How do I set up Safe browser as the browser by default?

This topic explains how to set up Safe Browser as the default or primary browser.

To take Safe Browser into use and to get the most out of the product, set Safe Browser as the default or primary browser on the device.

This is particularly important if the device belongs to a child and you want to protect their online activity. As a safety measure, you can also consider removing the other browsers from the child's device to ensure that the child cannot access other sites using other browsers.

If you are taking Safe Browser into use on your own device, there is no need to remove other browsers. However, make sure that you are always using Safe Browser if you want Secure Browsing to evaluate the safety of the websites that you visit and to prevent accidental access to harmful websites.

To set up Safe Browser as the default browser:

  1. On your device, select Settings > Apps > Choose default apps.
    The Default apps view opens.
  2. Select Browser app.
The Default browser app view opens.
  3. Select Salt Internet Security as the default browser app.

To test that Safe Browser has been enabled, in your browser, open this test page: https://unsafe.fstestdomain.com. If the page is blocked, Safe Browser has been set up successfully.

How do I see what Salt Internet Security has done?

This topic explains how to check that antivirus is on and is working as it should.

The antivirus part of the app is working when you can see a green tick in the main app view.

If you have turned scanning off, a yellow exclamation mark appears in the middle of the shield with the text «Your device is not protected». In the Virus & Threat protection view, the setting is also set to OFF.

To turn the protection on again, do the following:

  1. In the main app view, select Virus & Threat protection.
  2. Select Turn ON to reactivate the protection.

If it has been a while since you last scanned your device, select SCAN to activate a virus scan.

Protecting people & devices

How do I protect my devices?

This topic describes how to start protecting your own devices.

To set up protection for your own device:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. On the People & Devices view, select + ADD DEVICE.
  3. Select My device > Continue.
  4. Select how you want to deliver the installation link to the device you want to protect and then select SEND LINK.
  5. Open the message with your device and follow the installation instructions.
  6. Select Install from app store to go to the app store and select Install to start the installation.
  7. After the installation is complete, select Open to start the application.
The Welcome to Salt Internet Security page opens.
  8. If you agree to the End User License Terms, select ACCEPT AND CONTINUE.
  9. As you are setting up protection for yourself, select Continue to finalize the protection for the device.

Important: To be able to protect your device and connections, the app requires that you allow access to photos, media and files on your device.

You have now set up protection for your own device. To view and manage the protection of the above device, select the People tab, or log in to your account to access the online management portal.

How do I protect my device after receiving an invitation?

This topic describes how to start protecting your devices if you have received an invitation from your friend.

When your friend shares the protection with you, you'll receive an email in which you are invited to use their licenses to protect your PC, Mac, smartphone and tablet for free. We have already created an account for you, and you can find your account details in the message.

To start protecting your devices:

  1. Open the invitation email and read it through carefully. Take note of your account details.
  2. Select Start now.
    Your account login page opens.
  3. Enter your account login credentials sent to you in the invitation email and select Log in.
The Change your password window opens.
  4. Create a new strong password for your account, select Change, and then select Continue.

Your online management portal opens. Start protecting your devices by selecting Add device to install the product to one of your devices.

You can now manage your own devices and their protection either through the online management portal or through the product's People & Devices view. As an invited user, you can manage your account as follows: •

  • Protect more of your own devices if the subscription allows.
  • You can change the name of the device being protected.
  • You can release the license in use. Note that the subscription owner, or the person who invited you to share the protection, can remove your licenses at any time.
  • You can leave the group at any time.
  • You can make changes to your account settings, such as changing the account password and taking 2-step verification into use.

How do I share protection with someone?

This topic describes how to share the protection with a family member or a friend.

When you invite family members or friends to your group, the invited persons get their own user account that allows them to protect their devices using your licenses.

To share protection with someone else:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. On the People & Devices view, select + ADD DEVICE.
  3. Select Someone else's device > CONTINUE.
  4. To invite a user to your group:
    1. Enter the first name of the user.
    2. Enter the last name of the user.
    3. Enter the email address of the user.
    4. Select SEND INVITATION.

This person receives the invitation email and now has an account that allows them to protect their devices using your licenses. The users in your group won't see the devices or other details of other users or profiles in the group.

Note that if the person you want to invite to your group has already been added to your group or belongs to another Salt Internet Security group, you will see a message in the invitation dialog, saying that the person already belongs to your group or to another group. This means that the email address used in the invitation has already been activated for a Salt Internet Security account.

You can solve this either by using another email address, if any, to invite the user to your group or you can ask this user to delete the existing Salt Internet Security account after which you can then use the email address in the invitation.

Parental control

What is Family Rules?

Setting up Family Rules helps you keep your children safe from unsuitable content when on the internet.

The internet is full of interesting websites, but you might not consider all content desirable or appropriate, especially for children.

With Family Rules, there are different ways that you can restrict your child's internet usage as follows:

  • You can set time limits for daily use,
  • You can set a bedtime,
  • You can restrict the apps that your child has access to, and
  • You can block certain types of content.

For ease of use, you can manage your child's online activity on your own device. This is a versatile way to make changes, add or remove restrictions on the fly without having your child's device physically with you.

To start using Family Rules, install Salt Internet Security on your child's device and set up a child profile. You can set up Family Rules when setting up the Salt Internet Security app or any time afterwards. Once that's done, you can start protecting your child's online activity.

To view the different settings from your own device:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab. The People & Devices view opens.
  2. Select the child's device from the list.
  3. Under FAMILY RULES, select one of the following:
    • App Control o Daily Time Limits
    • Bedtime
    • Content Filtering
  4. Check the different settings and edit them if need be.

How do I edit content filtering settings?

With Content Filtering, you can ensure that your child only views appropriate content on their device.

Content Filtering works by restricting the websites that your child might access. The types of websites that your child can access are based on the profile set up for your child and the age group selected.

For this reason, Content Filtering only works if you set Safe Browser as the default or primary browser on your child's device.

To select the types of web content to block on all browsers:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. Select the child's device from the list.
  3. Under FAMILY RULES, make sure that Content Filtering is turned ON.
    • If Content Filtering is OFF, select Content Filtering and use the slider to turn it on, then select SAVE.
  4. Under BLOCKED CONTENT CATEGORIES, check that the content categories which you don't want your children to have access to are blocked.
Note: Click on a content category to see more detailed information about it.
  5. When you are sure that you have selected all of the content categories that you want to block, select SAVE.

If your child tries to access a website, which contains any of the content categories blocked by Content Filtering, the browser blocks it.

Remember: To use Content Filtering, the app requires you to set up a child profile first.

How do I limit the use of apps?

With App Control, you can select which apps are allowed when you set daily time limits and bedtimes. To limit apps:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. Select the child's device from the list.
  3. Under FAMILY RULES, make sure that App Control is ON.
    • If App Control is OFF, select App Control and use the slider to turn it on, then select SAVE.
  4. To see the list of current devices which have the App Control feature, select Which devices App Control works on.
  5. Under DEFAULT SETTING, you can define how a newly installed app is treated by App Control:
    • Time-limited – This means that the app use is restricted by daily time limits and bedtime limits.
    • Always blocked – This means that the app cannot be used at all.
  6. Under ALL CURRENT APPS, you can see the apps that have already been installed on the device. For each app, you can select individually how it is treated by App Control:
    • Time-limited – This means that the app use is restricted by daily time limits and bedtime limits.
    • Always allowed – This means that the app use is not restricted by daily time limits nor bedtime limits.
    • Always blocked – This means that the app cannot be used at all.
  7. Select SAVE.

The app or apps selected are now restricted by App Control.

How do I edit bed time settings?

By setting a bedtime, you can ensure that your child gets to sleep when they should.

With the bedtime setting, you can set a different bedtime for school nights—from Sunday night to Thursday night—and weekend nights—from Friday night to Saturday night.

To set bedtimes, do the following:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. Select the child's device from the list.
  3. Under FAMILY RULES, make sure that Bedtime is ON. o If Bedtime is OFF, select Bedtime and use the slider to turn it on, then select SAVE.
  4. On the Bedtime view, prevent the use of the device at night as follows:
    1. For School nights, turn on the School nights setup pane.
    2. Drag the slider to set the time when bedtime starts and ends.
    3. For Weekend nights, turn on the Weekend nights setup pane.
    4. Drag the slider to set the time when bedtime starts and ends.
    5. Select SAVE.

Bedtime limits are now set up.

Note: Making phone calls and sending SMS messages are always allowed.

How do I edit daily time limit settings?

By setting up daily time limits, you can limit the amount of time that your child can use their device. You can restrict the following:

  • How long your child is allowed to use their device per day. For example, you can allow access for only one hour per day.
  • At what time, your child is allowed to start using their device. For example, you can allow access only from 4 p.m. on school days.

Note: If you turn off the time limits, the child can use the device at any time. To set the allowed times:

  1. Open the Salt Internet Security app and select the People tab.
The People & Devices view opens.
  2. Select the child's device from the list.
  3. Under FAMILY RULES, make sure that Daily Time Limits is ON.
    • If Daily Time Limits is OFF, select Daily Time Limits and use the slider to turn it on, then select SAVE.
  4. On the Daily Time Limits view, set the maximum number of hours that your child is allowed to spend on the device on weekdays and at weekends:
    1. For weekdays, use the slider to change the maximum time allowed per day.
    2. For weekends, use the slider to change the maximum time allowed per day.
    3. Select SAVE.
Note: If you do not want to limit the amount of time that the child spends on the device each day, drag the slider as far to the left as possible to set the allowed number of hours to Unlimited.

Scanning

How do I run a virus scan manually?

You can scan your device for viruses and other malicious code any time you want.

To manually scan files on your device:

  1. Open the app, and select Virus & Threat protection.
  2. Select SCAN.
    The scan starts.
  3. After the scan is finished, the product shows the following information:
    • Total files checked - the number of the files that were scanned
    • Total apps checked - the number of applications that were scanned

Tip: By selecting Scan history, you can see the dates and times of both the manual and automatic scans.

How do I allow and block specific websites?

This topic explains what to do if you accidentally access a harmful site when using Safe Browser.

If you accidentally access a harmful website when using Safe Browser, the app automatically blocks access to it and shows a page telling you that the website you have just tried entering is harmful. There are two things that you can do after this:

  1. If you want to return to the original page that you left, select Go back on the page.
  2. If you know that the site is safe and you still want to enter the site, even though Safe Browser has blocked it, follow the I want to enter this web site anyway link on the page.

Banking Protection

How do I turn on banking protection (e-banking)?

The app can protect your online banking and shopping sessions by preventing harmful software or sites from collecting and sending out personal details that you enter, including credit card numbers, user account information, and passwords.

When Safe Browser is enabled and you enter an online banking or shopping site, the app automatically detects the site and puts all other network connections on hold, except for the sites that you need to carry out your transaction (and which have been verified as safe by Salt Internet Security).

All other connections are restored only when the session on the banking site is over. This additional security layer stops harmful software from sending out your private details.

Note: Protecting your online banking and shopping only works when you use Safe Browser. If you use any other browser, the app cannot protect your online banking or shopping sessions.

Once Safe Browser is turned on in the app, all other network connections are put on hold temporarily.

To access Safe Browser and trigger Banking Protection:

  1. Open the app, and select Secure Browsing.
  2. Select Start Safe Browser.
  3. Browse to an online banking or shopping site and carry out your transaction.
When you enter an online banking or shopping site, a notification appears in the app that says You have entered a trusted banking site. This means that the protection is working.

You can also simulate what the notification looks like by selecting the link See how this works on the Secure Payment & Banking page.

How do I activate Private VPN?
