Discontinuation of our MMS service

With the advent of smartphones and messenger apps, MMS has become increasingly irrelevant. With many alternatives (iMessage, Message+, WhatsApp, Signal, Threema, etc.) and a sharp decline in usage, main Swiss Telecom Operators, including Salt, will discontinue the MMS service from January 10th 2023.

What does this change mean for you?

The difference between SMS and MMS is quite simple. SMS are only texts and consist of a maximum of 160 characters whereas MMS can contain pictures, GIFs, videos, voice messages, documents, etc. A text with more than 160 characters will be sent as multiple SMS. 

As of 10 January 2023, if you want to send MMS you will have different options:

• iMessage: only from iOS to iOS devices*.

• Message+: only from Android to Android devices*.

• Messenger apps: you can find many messenger applications in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store such as WhatsApp, Threema, Signal, TeleGuard, etc.

*If you want to send pictures, GIFs, videos, documents, etc. from iOS devices to Android devices or vice versa, you will need to use a messenger application. There is no other alternative.
